Extrusion in plastics processing

Extrusion

For foil, fibre, pipes and profiles, cables

Extrusion is used to manufacture hoses, film, sheet or pipes with long lengths from plastic compounds (polymer materials or compounds). The plasticized material for this is continuously pressed through a die.

Products are often made from thermoplastics using extrusion. The process is continuous and has multiple steps. The raw material is placed in a cylinder where it is plasticized, homogenized and degassed using a screw. Usually single screws are used, but in individual cases double screws or multi screw wave systems can also be used. The plasticized mass is then pressed continuously through a die with a shaped opening (nozzle, template). This results in a continuous solid being produced in the shape of the opening. Afterwards, the extrudate is stabilized and cooled in this shape on a calibration and cooling line. As the process is theoretically endless, the finished product is cut to length at the end of the extrusion line, which is usually combined with grouping and packaging device. If the final product consists of multiple layers, multiple extruders are attached to one tool. This is called co-extrusion.

Continuous manufacturing of large quantities with the help of motan’s precise dosing & mixing units

Granulate, thermoplastic polymers and compounds, as well as regrind, masterbatches, additives or various aggregates are the most common raw materials for extrusion. The extrusion of elastomers is also possible.

The process manufactures products by the meter, such as foil, fibre, cable coatings, pipes or hoses.

Consistent and precise applications for mono and co-extrusion lines

We at motan-colortronic provide products for extrusion with high consistency and precision in the areas dosing & mixing for mono and co-extrusion line applications. Typical dosing & mixing units used in this context are, for example, those using volumetric dosing & mixing technology (SPECTROCOLOR V), continuous gravimetric loss-in-weight dosing (SPECTROCOLOR G) or gain-in-weight dosing in batch operation (GRAVICOLOR, ULTRABLEND)
